Baseball 2019 - Week 7 Power Rankings

Courtesy of Corry Smith

Power Rankings time. I looked at how many points each team had scored each week compared to the rest of the league that same week and based my rankings on that. The full week by week rankings are at the end, but overall results first. Also, just a reminder that this year we are doing our first ever punishment. We can decide a bit later on what that will be, but heads up to Charlotte!

Superlatives:

Most Dominant
Sam (Who Needs Hitters)
Sam has been the best team this year. I admit it. His record doesn't show it as he's in second place, but he has scored more points than anyone, and has dones so consistently. He has the best overall week (outside of week 1), and the least bad worst week. In every category besides overall record, he's on top. The overall record will catch up to that soon.

Most Likely To Not Recognize a Baseball if it Hit Them in the Head
Charlotte (Pitches Be Crazy)
And just as amazing as Sam's team has been, Charlotte's team has been the opposite. She has the least points scored by more than 300! She has the worst best week score, and her best week wouldn't have even beaten Sam's worst week! And she's consistently bad too. Averages 11th in weekly rankings and is 1-6 on the year. But you got to respect her faith in her team, like how she continues to play A.J. Minter - a reliever for the Braves who was sent down the minor leagues 2 weeks ago for being so bad (9.82 ERA). But ya never know, A.J. Minter may come back to the majors as an ace, Charlotte's team may start winning some games, and Lebron James may follow in Bruce Jenner's footsteps. Those are all equally likely to happen.

Most Underrated Record
Danee (No Way Jose)
Poor Danee. She's had the most points scored against her by 150! Her team really is solid, but 3 of her best players are on the IL and bad luck week to week has left her with the 2nd worst record. But when you take losses to Alec, Taylor, and Jordan it's going to be tough to compete. Her record will for sure improve, I'm just not sure there's enough time that it can improve to make the playoffs, which she definitely deserves.

Most Overrated Record
Alec (The Bay of Puigs Invasion)
Alec's team just makes me sad. He has some amazing players, like Trout, Goldschmidt, Cain, Davis, Strasburg, Hader, etc. But he is also still starting Joey Wendle, a guy who had a .300 average last year, but this year broke his wrist, is on the IL for 2 months, and was batting just .136 before getting hurt. So while his team has some superstar players, there's enough duds to have sunken this team into one of the worse. He'll continue to have weeks where he surprises with a bunch of points, because of those superstars, but overall, a 3-4 record feels too generous.

Most Unpredictable
Taylor (Billy Beane)
Taylor's team is a lot like Alec's team. He has weeks where he is a solid contender and has broken the 300 point mark, but he also holds the lowest score of any week. While stars like Baez, J.D., Hoskins, Lester, and Cole can give this team a great week anytime, he also had players like Christin Stewart who is batting .184, or his utility spot being filled by Danny Jansen, batting .186. Taylor can be a top 3 team each week, or literally the worst, and it seems to change week to week. He's been as good as 2 and 3 on a week, and as bad as 11 or 12 on a week. Just have no idea what this team is going to do.

Most Likely to Have a Better Second Half
Maraika (Maraika Rockwood)
Maraika's team is a lot of guys with slow starts, who have started to get hot. Guys like Bryant, Machado, Springer, Hosmer, and then Yelich who has been good from the start. But like her player's consistent improvement, Maraika's team has improved its weekly score each week, before this last week’s regression. But her team has star power, they're starting to heat up, and I think Maraika's team has a great second half of the season.

Most Likely to Have a Worse Second Half
Jordan (Harper Than it Looks)
Jordan's team isn't bad, but there's very few really good stars. There's been a lot of guys with good starts, but they seem to be playing above their skill level (Shin-Soo Choo). Jordan hasn't managed to put up more than 280 points in a week yet, and one of his 3 wins came by a single point. Unless there's some changes, and more activity, I think Jordan's gonna plummet down in the rankings before the season's done.

Most Likely to Be in a Boy Band
Taylor (BB), Creighton (All Braun), Alec (Bay)
I've already discussed Alec's and Taylor's team a bit, but Creighton's team is basically the same as theirs. Star power (Bellinger, Turner, Altuve, Severino), but he's also starting Russell Martin - a fine player when he plays, but he's only got 46 at bats this year. Bellinger, his teammate, has 163! These teams are the same. High upside could lead to big weeks (they've all eclipsed, or just about, reached the 300 mark), but their bad weeks are real bad (they've all had weeks scoring under 200). Each of these 3 teams average 267 points a week. They all average about 8th in the league week to week. And they're separated by 4 points on the year! So, you may say, they're quite N'Sync. Or they're going in One Direction. Get it? (shout out to when Dane, Sam, and Taylor were all legit in a boy band together).

Most Likely to Choke in Playoffs
Dane (Volume Shine and Hue)
Dane's team is solid. In fact, surprisingly so. I don't know why it surprises me, but I just didn't realize until I looked at his numbers that he's doing really well. He has a star roster with Arenado, Blackmon, Bogarts, Moncada, Price, Glasnow, Kluber. But for the most part, Dane's team hasn't show up like a championship team. He was the highest scorer Week 3 and showed what his team looks like when they are all on, but besides that he's always ended up in the middle. Most of his in our league rankings are average. But he's never scored below 200 (barely) and has the 3rd highest score for a best week’s score. He's a team that I think absolutely makes the playoffs, probably goes to the semi-finals, but that's about it. Too inconsistent in his scores, and that'll lead to a choke.

Most Mediocre
Dustin (Acuna Matata)
Dustin's team can mash. He has more homeruns than any other team, and has 6 players with more than 10 homers already. But besides that, Dustin's team is just kinda fine. He doesn't really rate high or low in anything. He's averaging the 7th best score each week. His best score for a week ranks 6th. His worst score ranks 7th. He has the 7th most points on the year. You seeing the pattern? He's a middle of the pack team who can hit bombs. And I'm not really sure how that's going to change. He has fine, but not stellar pitchers like Darvish and Gray. He has good, but not incredible players like Rizzo, Correa, Gallo, and Freeman. His team is just like a luke warm bowl of mediocrity. He's a bubble playoff team, but I'm not feeling the threat from him like I have in other sports or years past.

Most Likely to Meet in the Championship
Corry (Upton) and Tyler (Betts)
Is this because we are the two best teams? Not exactly. Sam is currently the best, and Dane's team should be included in any championship conversation as well. But the championship matchup for baseball has been me vs Tyler every year but one, and Tyler was still in that championship game. We currently rank #2 and #3 in total points. We currently share the best record. There's just no other way this season ends. Sam chokes in the playoffs, Tyler and I compete for the championship. (And then I figure out ways to kill his star player because apparently that's the only way to beat him.)
